Explore Minnesota Tourism Recognizes Tall Ships Campaign

Duluth, MN – Visit Duluth was awarded the top marketing award during Explore Minnesota Tourism’s Annual Excellence in Tourism Awards Banquet Tuesday evening, January 25, 2011. The event is a highlight of EMT’s annual Tourism Conference, held this year at Grand View Lodge in Nisswa. The conference brings visitor organizations together from across the state to provide strategic direction and celebrate Minnesota’s successes.

Visit Duluth was recognized for the effectiveness of its spring and summer marketing campaign promoting Tall Ships® Duluth 2010. Leveraging advertising, media relations, online and social marketing, Visit Duluth was able to attract more than 250,000 fans from July 28-August 1, and generate an estimated $15 million economic impact for Duluth. Tall Ships® Duluth 2010 is regarded as the region’s single biggest tourism event ever.

Visit Duluth has been recognized for its marketing effectiveness before at the Excellence in Tourism Awards, this is the second time in recent years it has taken the very top honor.

“Of course, the biggest honor for Visit Duluth is creating a successful event that generated so much revenue for our members, tax coffers, and for all of Duluth, “said Terry Mattson, President & CEO of Visit Duluth, “But it’s also very gratifying to be recognized by our industry and peers for all of our team’s hard work.”

Visit Duluth’s plans for another tall ship rendezvous are in process for 2013, and commitments must be made within 30 days. Those commitments depend on funding from the tourism tax. Promotion is the primary purpose of the tourism tax.
